I can imagine that a day in the life of a professional painter looks very free-flowing. As an artist, you move at your point of inspiration. You could wake up, have a healthy breakfast, get dressed in clothes that make you happy, and paint. You could also wake up in a rush to finish some paintings for a client. Life could involve studying different art forms, reading art books to expand your knowledge, and going to art museums. I would suggest following some of your favorite artists on social media or reading some autobiographies about some. Good luck in your future endeavors.

I come from a family of musicians have am close friends with a professional fine artist. I also just painted a wall in my house so recently thinking about "professional painters".

First, it's worth clarifying - do you mean painter as fine artist, or painter as in someone who covers walls? Both are completely legitimate paths but would probably be very different experiences.

Assuming you are talking about the former ("fine artist") the biggest reality check is that most artists spend a good part of their early career dependent on another source of income besides their art to meet their expenses. Lot of artists will have a partner or family member who supports them, and more often then not they work another job, typically in teaching, service, or retail. Therefore, the day in the life for many aspiring artists could involve spending 8 hours at a totally unrelated job, and fitting in art around that.

This can be a real challenge, both for building the career as an artist and for one's personal life. In order to overcome the challenge and stay dedicated to the path of an artist, it's essential to (a) be exceptionally good at one's craft - usually requiring many years of highly focused practices with the support of top-notch coaches, teachers, and mentors, and (b) find a viable market niche for one's art.

Artists who find a path to reliably monetize their work and who are the best at what they do can build a career as an artist. Many others end up with art as a hobby, but not a "profession". And that's fine too.

Joe recommends the following next steps:

Brainstorm the type of painting professions you want to learn more about
Identify local painters who you best resemble that definition (Google, ask adults you know for recommendations, etc)
Reach out to those painters and ask if you can interview them - or better yet, shadow for a day!
