How do the apparel and the hair/makeup of a fashion show work yogethrr to craft a specific aesthetic?

I want to pursue a career in either Apparel Design or Cosmetology, and I would like to know how the two can correspond with each other. #cosmetology #makeup #apparel-and-fashion #fashion-shows #hair-stylist #clothing-design

Apparel design and cosmetology can definitely go hand in hand with each other. If you have an interest in both go for it. They both can work together in the fashion styling aspect. When you're styling clients it's like you're making them over from head to toe, so if you have the experience and background to also do the hair and make-up then that's a plus. You can build your own clientele when it comes to designing and doing hair and make-up. It depends on the direction you are trying to go in. You can be a stylist for a company or a top designer and be like the design assistant and partake in being a stylist as well. You definitely can do a lot with apparel design and cosmetology. They work well with each other!

Hi Nolan,

This is a very good question!

I've been around a lot of shows here in NY and have a personal network of hair and makeup artists and it is a hard but rewarding job! Lots of fun and it's all about building a network and getting referrals. Always be yourself too. Creativity is so important and being a professional always. Being kind helps too!

The process of collaboration begins with the fashion designer choosing the hair and make up artists for their show based on the artists aesthetic and creativity. Once they've chosen their artist they show the artist what their own inspiration was for the collection-tone, colors, art, etc. Once they are able to collaborate the artist then puts together a "look" they want to show on each of the models. This look will convey the essence of the collection (clean, edgy, etc) so to only enhance the collection, not take away from it. The hair and makeup artists aren't always the same person. This depends on the size of the designer and their budget. The artists then hire a team to execute their vision for the show. Think about who (Pat McGrath is a great example) inspires you and if you love makeup or hair. It's always in your benefit to know how to do both but if you love one of them, focus on it! Hope this helps and good luck!

Shay recommends the following next steps:

research your favorite artists (Pat McGrath is a good one) and look at their career trajectory and see how you can follow it and also create your own path!

Nancy’s Answer

Hi Nolan, I had the opportunity to work behind the scenes at a few fashion shows while in design school. People attending this type of event don't really have any idea of the craziness that goes on getting the models ready to walk the runway. Sometimes, the models do their own make up though there may be a professional artist doing it. In Vogue magazine, you may see some unusual or extreme eye shadows or lip colors used. you don't typically see this on the average woman. Besides, they need to know the proper way to apply the products You certainly want the colors and design of the clothing to work well and enhance the accessories and make up. Both fashion design and cosmetology, to me, take good hands and artistic abilities- these a very visual fields- you need to have a good eye. I hope this reply helps.
