Some qualities you would need to possess include:

1. Being empathetic
2. Good listening skills
3. Being able to be caring
4. Being compassionate
5. Being able to remain calm in sometimes extreme circumstances
6. Being open minded

I would say from my experience have patience is one of the biggest characteristics you need. It is so important to be able to wait for your patients to reach a level they feel comfortable to talk with you, and seek treatment. I also recommend people who are kind and all of the other qualities listed from above comments!
