R’s Answer

Hello Matthew,

It is a very interesting question that you pose which also very personal in nature. I would say it totally depends on whats your definition of success in life ?
In general for anyone wanting any kind of success in life few habits that would help a great deal are
1. Cultivate a habit of learning - whether through books, people or internet. Keep aside a fixed time in your day to learn something new.
2. Prioritize your health and well being always - set aside 30 minutes each day to work out.
3. Develop a hobby that you are passionate outside your work life, might seem trivial but is really useful and effective in life.

Hope this helps!

Ability to recognize your own shortcomings, seek the wisdom of others, make your own decisions, take responsibility for the outcome, and learn from the experience.

Always treat others as you would want your Grandmother to be treated

Zoë’s Answer

I watched an interview once with Will Smith where he answered this exact question and it's stuck with me ever since I heard it.

Two ways to become successful are:
1) Reading
2) Running

Reading - You should always be curious about the world, and learning is an important part of becoming successful. Learning should never end even after your formal education does. That's why its important to constantly improve yourself through reading, listening to podcasts, watching interesting films, and speaking with others who are different than you.

Running - Running for miles is hard. You are alone, there is no end in sight, and the only thing stopping you from taking that next step is you. If you can learn to overcome the voice in your head that tells you to quit when you feel at your weakest, then you can learn to overcome anything.

Marlowe’s Answer

For me, creating structure and maintaining my mental health are two habits that have enabled me to be successful (and happy!) throughout high school and college. These two habits could definitely mean different things to different people. But for me, I've created structure by making a master schedule of assignments and due dates at the start of every quarter, and entering this information (along with my class times) into Google Calendar. I also schedule social events, other obligations, and sometimes even break periods into Google Calendar. Some of the most important ways I maintain my mental are exercising frequently, getting outside at least once per day, journaling, cooking new meals, and unwinding with fun tv. All of these habits collectively have set me up for success.

Tonya’s Answer

First, for yourself, identify success. One may consider work and consider success as money, position/title, or other measurable events. Or, one may consider personal success and think of friends, health, and contributions to society. Some habits will transcend both areas of success in life. A journaling activity is to write the habit and identify how can you use the habit in different areas of life.

Two areas are to learn the habits of emotional intelligence and executive function.

Emotional intelligence (EI) is considered the ability to know one’s emotions, manage self in different situations, and consider others’ emotions in situations. Executive function (EF) is considered managing oneself mentally, emotionally, in thinking, and in actions. The two ideas can intertwine. An advantage with both ideas, is one can develop the skills of EI and EF over time. There are self-assessment tests that can be taken and retaken to identify if one has developed the associated habits. In the academic and work environment I have heard faculty and bosses say a person lacks EI or EF and then mentor the person to develop those skills

Another area is to know thy self. What are your strengths, talents, and areas of growth (S.T.G)? One wonderful aspect of yourself is S.T.G can appear at different times of life. You can discover items about yourself that appear presently, and then in later years new S.T. Gs appear. Have a habit of asking questions like a child – who, what, when, where, why, how; seek new adventures, meeting people that may help you reveal a new S.T.G about yourself and reflect on what went well in a day and what to grow from.

Enjoy developing your habits for success.

Mark’s Answer

Hi Matthew, what a wonderful question!

There's no single correct answer, since the habits that help each person be successful in life will vary. That said, you can spend some time on introspection to understand 1) what your current priorities are or what you want to achieve, 2) what habits are helping you achieve those things, and 3) what habits are not helping you achieve those things. Do more of #2 and less of #3, and you'll be well on your way to achieve your definition of a successful life!

Soh-Ling’s Answer

It's indeed an interesting question! Glad to see that most of the responses have mentioned the important of keeping good health. Personally, keeping up with physical health and mental health is something that you don't want to miss everyday, in other words, you need to cultivate good habits to maintain that.
There are many sources to maintain physical health, to me, having balance diet, consistent exercise routine, sleep well are good habits.
While for mental health, it's important to have "me" time, could be reading, watching favorite movie, listening to music & etc, personally, picking up mindfulness practice is the best gift for myself to keep up with mental health.

Just few cents of my thoughts, wish you all the best!
