Hi James. To become a barber in the state of New York here are the requirements:
State License Requirements
You must complete an approved course of study or a two-year apprenticeship. Once you have finished your training, you may submit your application with your initial licensing fee. Once you pass your examinations, you can get your initial license.
If you google "Barber schools in NYC" you will see there are quite a few. I would suggest you speak to a few barbers in your area to see where they did their training and whether they would recommend that program or not.
Good luck!

Hello James, being a barber is not really a professional or office work, so you might only need to get a certificate of cosmetology in a college which usually does not take more than 3 months or 6 months, depending on the school or courses to take, check extra curricular activities in colleges, or summer courses in the college close to you to know more about it.

You could enlist in the Navy and be trained as a barber! They would also offer tuition assistance to further your training during your enlistment or after your discharge!
