sharmela’s Answer

The first step is to obtain your 4 year college degree. You can choose any major. You then have to take the LSAT and apply to law school. Once you graduate law school, you will then have to take the Bar Exam in the state(s) where you would like to practice. Once you pass the Bar Exam you then have to apply for Admission to practice. This means that you must submit an application to the appropriate agency in the State where you are going to practice so you can become licensed.

Caroline’s Answer

Hi Marlo - I’ve been a lawyer for over 20 years and feel it is a terrific career. There are so many different types of places to work-such as in law firms, in companies’ in-house legal departments, in government agencies , in non-profit organizations, or in academia as a law school professor. Also, as a lawyer there are numerous types of law to practice - corporate, litigation, tax, human relations, intellectual property, real estate, health care, finance. - that list is endless. Every area of our society has a corresponding area of law. So you can take any of your interests and strengths and apply them as a lawyer. I was always interested in health and medicine but did not want to be a doctor so I became a health care lawyer initially. So I think it’s great you’re interested in becoming a lawyer.

How to become a lawyer? First go to college. You can be practically any major but learn enough about society to start getting ideas about what areas of law you’d be most interested in. Also do the best you can in college. A high GPA will help you get into a good law school. Then you take an LSAT exam in your senior year of college and apply to law school. You’ll have to write essays about why you want to go to law school and you’ll need recommendations from professors so make sure to have two professors in college who you have a good relationship with and who really know you. Law school is 3 years and you get a JD degree and then you take the Bar Exam in the state where you want to practice law and you’re a lawyer! Law schools will help you find a job but the job market can be tough so go to the best law school you can, and do the best you can in law school.

I hope that’s helpful! Good Lu k!

Caroline recommends the following next steps:

Earn a BA or BS in college
Take the LSAT exam
Apply to law schools
Go to law school and get a JD degree
Take the Bar Exam

I admire your interest in the law. My hope is that a lawyer or two will see your question and give some feedback on their experiences. But, until then, I did locate an interesting website that gives lots of ideas and steps:
