What are the different roles for an air traffic controller?
I am interested in possibly working with some type of gadgets to direct the aircraft so I'm wondering what exactly my options are.

While I can't speak to Air Traffic Controller responsibilities myself, because I am not one, I would encourage you to also explore Aircraft Dispatcher opportunities.
A Dispatcher path would afford you many options in terms of job opportunities, industries and companies, like Southwest Airlines in the commercial aviation space, FedEx in the logistics space, or Government. Additionally, Dispatcher jobs can be very lucrative, especially at the major airlines. There is also a good demand for them.
