Am I looking at a job that's right for me?

I have always been interested in photography and have recently found a passion for fashion as well. My biggest concern about this is that there might not be a job market for this. One of my possible career choices that I would like to pursue is a fashion photographer. I understand that the arts are becoming bigger every year and more job openings come up for these fields but is a fashion photographer one of them?

Hi Delanie,
There is a market for fashion photographers if that's what you're thinking of. And, there is a need for talented photographers. Regardless of what area of photography you pursue, first you have to become proficient as a photographer. You have to learn how to use a camera and produce great images consistently. You have to build a website with only your very best work and market yourself to prospective clients.

Photography can be a very competitive field and takes creativity and hard work to advance within this area. If you are interesting in fashion, certainly study current and upcoming fashion trends and try to develop a edge that may make you unique within the market. This edge could be working with a company for several years to improve your skills, or it may be teaming up with a wardrobe specialist and makeup artist to bring a unique flavor to your trade.

Hi, Delanie. You can have a career as a fashion photographer but it won’t be easy - nothing in life is and many people work hard to get where they want to get, Trust me it’s sweeter when you earn it yourself. Photography is a very competitive field and that competition extends into fashion photography. Most of the work will be freelance which will be based on your business acumen, your ability to hustle, make contacts and network for work and of course talent. But if you hone your skills in all of these areas it can be a very exciting and rewarding profession and lifestyle - yes lifestyle, as a fashion photographer you may be traveling to remote and exotic locations and living out a suitcase. I’m not writing this to dissuade you but better to be told up front on what may come as a professional fashion photographer.
