Hi Jessica,

I have to agree with Lisa. Everyone gauges success differently, so the question really is, what does success look like for you? I can give you a bit of my back story on what success looks like for me and also what degree I decided to take.

My family was, and still is, low-income. Growing up was difficult and I saw my parents struggle each day to provide for us. it's weird because my parents see me now and probably think, "She's successful," but success to me is having something to give back to the community. Creating something valuable that influences people. The CareerVillage site is something successful in my eyes, helping students like you. :)

Also, if you choose a degree that alines with your heart and passion, you will be successful. So what does success mean to you Jessica.

Dream big, Vivian

Lisa’s Answer

The most important question one can ask is what it means to be successful in life. Degrees are not useful if you define success in a way that that degree will be unused or unneeded. I have degrees in the Natural Sciences, Philosophy and French language. I used all of these to the best of my abilities.

However, my success in life comes not from the degrees, but what I did with the knowledge I gained about respecting the Earth, travel and philosophy in general. Living an ethical life, living simply and being kind to others has defined my success as a person. It's not the degrees I earned, but by always striving to do good in the world.

Success also comes with living your passions. Mine are the ocean and flowers and food. I also love educating others when I have some knowledge to impart, so I explored all of those passions and became successful (happy) because of it.

Best of luck in your studies.
