Writing a good college essay requires honesty. If you are honest with schools about what excites you to join their school and what you hope to gain from higher education then schools will understand that earnest strength within. Too often students write about things they think will make them look good and then struggle when they arrive at school because it is not the correct setting for them due to putting an elusion forth in their essay. Be honest with yourself and with the school for what you want to be your future. Share your genuine strengths and talents and do not put on a 'show' that is not true to who you are. All the best!

I think it would be good to start at the beginning which means read the particular school's instructions for the essay and make an outline of what they expect. These would be things like how many words, the length of the essay, etc. and after you do that, use the outline to write a rough draft.
Try to catch the reader's attention in your first paragraph. Describe what you will be discussing in the essay and add some personality in your writing. Be as original as possible. I would suggest staying away from writing over used sayings and instead of "I feel" write "I believe". Be straightforward, confident and keep your grammar on an even level without throwing in flowery language or words that you do not usually use. Talk about your academic goals and what you plan to do with your degree. Address all the things they ask of you in their instructions.
After you have written an essay that you are comfortable with, have a relative or friend read it and give feedback. You may find yourself rewriting some of it or get inspired to take the essay along a different path. Keep having your essay reviewed by someone and ask them to see if the grammar and sentence structure and spelling need corrections.
This is your chance to introduce yourself to and impress your prospective college. Approach it in a relaxed manner but keep in mind any deadlines. If you have any specific questions about any part of the process, do write another question for us here at Career Village.
