Well done on achieving your certification! Starting your journey in a software company with a role in business development or sales development is a great place to start. These roles offer you exposure to various departments and roles, providing a broad understanding of the company's operations. They also give you the opportunity to boost your confidence by interacting with management at different levels.

Remember, your certification is a stepping stone, a ticket to get you through the door. However, the bulk of the knowledge required to thrive in the tech industry will be acquired on the job. Once you've gained experience in sales development, you have the freedom to explore various areas within the company. These could include tech marketing, partnerships, support roles, operations, solution engineering, or even developer roles. The key is to continuously learn and acquire new skills.

Gina’s Answer

The opportunities available to you can vary based on the type of certification you have and the method you used to acquire it. If you attended college classes to secure your certification, your college might offer helpful resources like internships or job openings specifically for its students. On the other hand, if you studied independently, it would be beneficial to revisit the website that issued your certification. For instance, CompTIA has a valuable Resources page that outlines the different jobs you might now qualify for.

Gina recommends the following next steps:

If you took classes through a college or online course, refer to the class syllabus or overview to look for opportunities
If you self-studied, refer to where you became accredited, such as CompTIA's Resources page: https://www.comptia.org/resources

What certifications have you earned? That would help us know how best to answer. Ed's recommendation to seek an internships spot on. If you can afford to work for almost nothing for a period of time (no more than 6 months) then that might be a foot in the door. If you earned those at a university/college they will more than likely have an office that helps people like you find internships. Please share your certifications so we can be more specific than that.

Ed’s Answer

It depends on the area you live you can look at the jobs available on a local employment government site. Or you can call a temp agency who will tell you what are the highest demanded positions. Lastly try a business you may be interested in, you may be able to get an internship to see if you like it which may lead to a position offered. Try it all by phone first. You may have to relocate to take full advantage of your skill set.

Most likely without some previous experience, certifications will get you in the door for an entry level role. We're talking analyst, specialist, support roles. Just understand that everybody starts out at the bottom and works their way up.

If you don't have a LinkedIn Account, I highly suggest you set one up so you can network virtually and join groups that you are interested in to learn more.
