Hi Dora,

Volunteering at Kaiser would definitely help and look good on your application to medical schools. It demonstrates that you have experience in the hospital environment. Since you are still in high school, you should focus on getting into an undergraduate program first. I would recommend attending a university that has a medical school, or is connected with one. Going to a university that has a good science program would also help since the MCAT (exam for medical school applicants) has about 4 sections of sciences. While in college, try finding internship opportunities in the hospital, and in research.

I was a pre-medical student at one point, but decided to switch to pharma industry towards my last year of college. I have friends, and my sister is in medical school.

Best,
Herman

Volunteering and shadowing are so important in our medical school application. Interviewers want to see that you have a good idea of what the practice of medicine is really like. For example, we have a local clinic that allows college students to scribe for the providers. This gives you the opportunity to see caring for patients firsthand and learn the language and vocabulary of the medical field.
