Pharmacists, what is your work environment like?

For example, do you work independently or dependently? What do you wish you knew before starting the job? What are some of the challenges you faced on the job and how did you get through them?

There are many different avenues within the pharmacy profession that you can pursue. Many of these are very different from what most people see at their local outpatient or community pharmacy. There are pharmacists who work in hospitals, in clinics, in drug information centers and in poison control centers to name a few.

For example, I work as a clinical pharmacist in a hospital. I specialize in pediatrics and split my time between the Newborn ICU, the Pediatric ICU and the general pediatric unit. I love my job and find it very rewarding. I work as part of a multi-disciplinary team that includes, physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, dieticians and respiratory therapists. I function as the drug expert on the team. I am asked to give my opinion on which medications to use and how to dose it correctly every day (in pediatrics we dose most things based on the patient's weight.)

Tamara recommends the following next steps:

Before you decide to apply to pharmacy school, shadow as many different types of pharmacists that you can. A Doctor of Pharmacy degree will open doors to jobs that you don't even know exist.

Hi, I work in a corporate pharmacy. I have worked for independent pharmacy before the current job.

If I could go back 40 years I would go to medical school.

Being a pharmacist is like tying my hands. Prescriptions come in wrong. Simple fix BUT we have to either send back to the office OR wait on hold for someone to give us their name and correct the order.
