What is a day in the life of a music producer like?

I want to learn more about a #music-producer or #record-producer because I want to go into the music industry. What do you do every day and how do you find #musicians to manage? #music #music-production #recording-studio

Thank you comment icon Hi there Audrey! I think that your question is awesome, and thank you for asking it. Now, I am a student studying Music Technology at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and absolutely love it! It's very challenging and a lot of work. I learn how to produce music, I learn a lot about the programs and how to do basic things that of course I would build on with my own creativity and own purposes. With that being said, I would say to go on to my school's website and look into the courses offered by music technology and even email my professors to see if they can tell you more. I am not a music producer just yet, but am working on my portfolio. So, I'd say look into these courses, do some googling of stuff you don't know, and then email the professors. Akaisha

Dealing with music all day :)

If you want to become a music producer, the best way is to take a music production course. It is going to help you become a master for it. There, you can have connections with musicians and go for internships at recording studios. You can try even now to ask some studios if they can take you for a free internship so you can learn on the spot.

A music producer's day can vary wildly. It depends very much on what genre they work in, or whether they produce music for individual artists as opposed to film music, for instance. Ideally, producers are knowledgeable about the entire record-making process from start to finish, have a vision, and see that vision through. So the day-to-day could involve any step of that creative process.

A hip-hop producer may spend all day crafting a beat or two, either alone or with collaborators (other producers or writers), or they may produce a vocal session with an artist for one of those beats. On the flip side, they could spend an entire day in meetings.

A rock producer may spend the day talking with a band about which of their songs they're actually going to record. Or they could spend a day just honing a drum or guitar sound for an album, testing instruments, mics, preamps, amp settings, and so on. They might spend a week recording and editing vocals. Maybe they're sitting in on a mixing or mastering session.

As far as finding musicians to manage, management is really another topic. But to find musicians to produce, that typically comes from positive word-of-mouth and making as many connections as you can. Careers in the entertainment industry thrive on connections, quality of work, and especially a good attitude. If people hear you're super talented and also a pleasure to work with, they'll be interested in finding out more about you.
