What is your guy’s opinion of me pursuing a career in welding?
I have plenty of experience with mig and decent experience with arc. I have only tig welded once though. I am already at the stage of welding up chassis and frames for my own mini bikes and go carts. I do a lot of metal work and metal fabrication.

It appears to me that you're well on your way to an impressive welding career. You're already leaps and bounds ahead of most beginners. It's clear that you've built a solid foundation and could likely land a welding job with ease. The real question is, do you see yourself doing this for the rest of your life? It seems like you not only have the skill, but also a genuine passion for it. I would absolutely encourage you to go for it. My top piece of advice would be to continue your education simultaneously. Holding welding-related degrees will unlock a wealth of opportunities for you as you progress in your career. Perhaps consider enrolling in a local welding school to gain more experience. There are usually welding jobs available that don't require previous experience. These jobs could be your stepping stone to more opportunities. Wishing you all the best on your journey!

Welding is an honorable profession that can pay rather well. As you already know, there are various types of welding and welds. Some advanced welding positions are in the oil and gas industry, ship-builiding and repair, to include underwater welders, and I think maybe setting up hospitals or restaurants, which use lots of stainless steel.
The military also utilizes welders, to include underwater ones, and will see to it that you get the best available training. If that is something you are interested in, I encourage you to explore it with your local recruiters.
Many welders also explore the arts side of things, creating sculptures from scrap metal and selling to people!
In the meantime, I encourage you to follow all safety precautions when welding - there are no shortcuts. I have been present when fires started from welding activity which took place during very dry climate conditions. Please keep a hose/fire extinguisher nearby! Also, take care of yourself, wearing appropriate clothing and eye protection.

Thank you so much for the input. I really do enjoy welding and I have been doing it since I was 10 when my father fought me. I plan to finish up at old dominion university with my MET degree and see if I can snag an internship or job at Langley. From there, I hope to secure a decent paying job. My father back in the day, was one of 2 welder certified I-CAR technicians in the state of Virginia, so let’s just say he’s taught me a few things about welding :)

This is a great question! I will comment from the perspective of the proving ground garage where I most recently worked. Our team included electrical, general assembly and fabrication technicians and our focus was automotive and military advanced future vehicles. The work varied daily which made it very exciting. Welding was critical in the building of our advanced concept vehicles. Our Fabrication technicians fabricated small to very large parts – using numerous types of shop equipment, welding, working with engineers and CAD designers to develop concept vehicles including providing input on designs and concepts, and inventing. Our team was highly skilled and in great demand – it is a great field to go into.
