First jobs help?

What's the best job to get as a first job? Work hours and such. Including pay. Could it possibly be a summer job to? Do I need to have any work experience?

Hi Emma. I know how daunting it can be when applying for your first job when you have no experience. My first job, as well as most of my friends' first jobs, was as a sales associate at a department store. I think I made $10/hour (this was back in 2019) and I generally liked the job as I mostly put clothes back from the fitting rooms and they respected my class schedule. There's lots of shopping in Mesquite so I'm sure there would be plenty of places to apply, but I will say the wages are a gamble. Many places will pay minimum wage and those that don't likely won't be much more. This isn't necessarily a bad thing depending on why you're wanting to work. If you just want some extra money and to get some experience, you might not mind making minimum wage, but if you're saving up for college or trying to help pay bills, that may not be enough for you. Grocery stores tend to have slightly higher pay and are another common first job that doesn't require experience. I also had friends who were lifeguards, car wash attendants, and fast food workers. I would recommend browsing job websites like Glassdoor and Indeed where the hours and wages are posted. Sometimes hiring managers just post jobs on these sites to advertise them and they don't actually follow up with applicants so you might apply directly through the business's website or in person if possible, but it's a good place to get a baseline expectation for what the job would be like and who is hiring. No matter what job you get, it will definitely be a learning experience and it probably won't be your dream job, but it's a start.

As a first job, I would second what Melinda said, sales is a great start. In addition to her points, sales allows you to build soft skills which you can take into any career of your interest.

Good evening,
Your first job is entirely up to you. You should look into something you would enjoy doing. For example my first job was working down at a jet ski rental company. I was able to meet new people, had fun working on the water and learned new skills.
As far as pay, as with any job, no experience means entrance level pay.

If you haven't had work experience, a summer job could be a great start. Check out what's available in your area and apply for any that sound interesting. You won't know at this point where your career might lead but having a variety of experience will be helpful. And if you haven't yet, I'd suggest doing some volunteer work so you can add skills to your job applications.
