Power BI Desktop and Power BI Service are two components of the Power BI platform, but they serve different purposes:

Power BI Desktop: Power BI Desktop is a Windows application that allows you to create and design interactive data visualizations, reports, and dashboards. It provides a robust set of features and tools for data modeling, transformation, and visualization. With Power BI Desktop, you can connect to various data sources, shape and clean your data, build relationships between tables, and create compelling visualizations using a drag-and-drop interface. It is primarily used by data analysts and report designers during the development phase.

Power BI Service: Power BI Service, also known as Power BI Online or Power BI Cloud, is the cloud-based service provided by Microsoft. It allows you to publish, share, collaborate, and consume Power BI reports and dashboards. Power BI Service provides web-based access to your reports and allows you to interact with them, view real-time data, and create and share dashboards. It also offers additional features like data refresh scheduling, data alerts, collaboration capabilities, and sharing options. Power BI Service is designed for end-users to consume and collaborate on reports and dashboards created in Power BI Desktop.

In summary, Power BI Desktop is the tool for creating and designing interactive reports and visualizations, while Power BI Service is the platform for publishing, sharing, collaborating, and consuming those reports and dashboards in a web-based environment. Both components work together to provide a comprehensive business intelligence solution.

Note: Also the use of AI(copilot) in all of the application is increasing so keep an eye out on that as well and get familiarize on these as well

Zoe’s Answer

Hello Teja!

Power BI is a powerful tool to create interactive visualizations and reports for different data sources. The main difference Power BI desktop and Power BI Service is their functionality and purpose. Power BI Desktop provides the tools for creating and designing reports and visualizations. These tools in the desktop application allow for complex reports and visualizations to be built. Once the reports and visualizations are built and refined, they can then be published to Power BI Service. Power BI Service is cloud-based where users can publish, share, and collaborate on reports and visualizations. In summary, Power BI Desktop should be used to create and design reports, and Power BI Service should be used to publish reports for collaboration and to be able to access reports online.

Luchelle’s Answer

Power BI Desktop is a free application that you download and install on your local computer while Power BI service is a cloud-based service, or software as a service (SaaS) which would require a license and subscription to use. While both offer reports and visualizations, there's a difference in the data sources that can be used in both, as well as row level security management.
