Douglas’s Answer

There are a few reasons that come to mind:

1) A lot of graduates are hesitant to take a job that they feel isn't exactly what they want to do.
2) Many graduates, because they lack work experience, need to find creative ways to package their strengths to convince a company to hire them. Building a compelling resume coming right out of college can be challenging.
3) Depending on the field, some jobs have much more competition - which again makes an effective resume incredibly important, because you need to find a way to separate yourself from the competition.

Steve’s Answer

Hi Samuel,

Your question has many possible answers. I will do my best to provide some reasons that graduates have difficulty finding a job.

First, college needs to be taken seriously. In my experience, the most successful students have a much easier time getting job offers than students who don't put in as much effort. Obviously good grades are important, however, networking with professionals in the career field that you want to get into is also very beneficial. I believe that making connections and receiving good grades are the biggest steps in getting a post-college job.

Additionally, it is important for college students to recognize that not all degree programs have the same potential for post-graduation jobs. Currently, there is a large demand for people with STEM degrees. Students with these degrees may have an easier time finding a job after college. On the other hand, a student who is majoring in a more niche degree like art history, may find their job prospects are more narrow.

Lastly, many graduates may have a preference of where they want to live/work. However, graduates are more likely to get a job if they are willing to relocate to other areas of their state/country to work.

Hopefully this helped answer your question. Good luck.
