I've had two books published as you have multiple venues to try.

First, you can self-publish in which you're charged a fee for books being published. You then market the books on Amazon and other venues. If there is a local book club, be involved as you have to be as good a Marketer as you are a Writer.

You can also try to be published with a Publisher paying you for your book but it's much harder as a first time writer as they need to be sure they'll make a profit. These cases are best if you are publishing a niche topic or speciality where Universities can order quantities of your work to be used.

matthew recommends the following next steps:

Give your outline/published work to friends/family for reading and reviews to edit

There's usually two routes to publishing: Traditional or self-publishing. both with pros and cons.
Traditional publishing is a fascinating industry. in order to get your manuscript published, first it's recommended to show it to a literary agent. How do you find a literary agent? Well, look up different agencies and click on different agents. See what kind of works they represent and see if they take unsolicited submission. Another route to take is, look at the books you like read, find out who's the authors' agent and see if they're independent or if they work for an agency. From there, same as I mentioned before- look around for agents who represent works similar to the one you want to publish and go from there.
Another route, is, network with other authors and find out about their literary agents. Or, look up publishers you like and see if they take unaccented or unsolicited submissions and, well, submit your work. And yes, to do all this, you're going to need to write a query letter (and personally speaking, they're annoying, but crucial. So practice writing yours.)
Lastly, if you'd like to get your manuscript published but don't wanna deal with all these agents and publishers, you can always self publish. it's a lot of work but for those who love it, its very well worth it. however, if you do choose this route, I recommend hiring freelance editors to help your manuscript be the best version of your story before putting it out into the world.
Thank you comment icon Great information, Jose! Thank you for clarifying the differences between the types of publishing so well. While I had heard of both, this really clears up what it takes for each method to succeed! Bridget

Getting a manuscript noticed by a publisher requires strategy, persistence, and a bit of finesse. Here are some key steps to improve your chances:
1. Research Publishers
Find publishers that align with your genre and writing style. Some publishers specialize in fiction, while others focus on academic or non-fiction works. Understanding their preferences increases your chances of acceptance.
2. Perfect Your Manuscript
Ensure your manuscript is polished, well-edited, and formatted correctly. Publishers appreciate clean, professional submissions that are easy to read.
3. Write a Strong Query Letter
Your query letter is your first impression. Make it engaging, concise, and tailored to the publisher. Highlight your book’s unique selling points and why it fits their catalog.

When you're reaching out to publishers, the first thing they will look at is your cover letter. This is possibly the most important part of your entire application to get your manuscript published. Your cover letter should include your background (your knowledge and experience) as well as a blurb of your story so they can know what to expect from your book. You might notice that some publishers ask for the first chapter of your book and others only require a blurb of your story. Well, I suggest that you add a blurb to your cover letter without being told because that will get them interested in reading your book.
I hope that makes sense and you will get noticed by a publisher quickly.
