How hard is it to become a fashion stylist in the competitive market in california? #Spring25
I want to become a male fashion stylist based in California. I ask this question because I heard of how competitive it is to land a job in a fashion brand or magazine, and also even running your own freelancing business. I'm hoping to pursue my dream of styling other as I already somewhat do. I want people to feel confident in their style. I would love to style others to make them confidence. I say this because style is confidence.

Consider becoming an influencer on social media. If you feel sure about your fashion sense, you can create your own looks and share them online. Fashion is all about personal identity because style is unique to each person. Building a social media presence to show off your style can be very beneficial for your future.(similar to portfolio for a graphic designer)

Never let the idea of the career stop you from pursuing the career. I can tell that you have a strong drive towards fashion and to worry about the competitiveness of this or any career will hold you back. You and no one else can predict how your career will go - that's the whole point of trying and applying oneself. You'll have your own unique opportunities and path towards becoming a professional Fashion Designer and Stylist.
Since you are already a Stylist, make sure to take before and after photos of everyone you style. Create a hard copy as well as an online portfolio of your work. Attend Fashion School before you relocate to California. Build collections of your fashions. This is a very demanding career, takes lots of time and dedication and the sewing skills must be advanced. You're going to need lots of experience so you can navigate the different situations involved with being a Fashion Designer and Fashion School will prepare you wonderfully for the real world. It will also offer you opportunities that you wouldn't otherwise have.
You're going to need to put yourself right in the heart of fashion, so going to fashion school will do that and you'll be around fashion professionals everyday. Start local. You'll need a good collection and also continue with Styling. The more talents you have, the better.
Throw competition, or the fear of it, to the wind. Once you graduate Fashion School, start applying to be featured on one of the Fashion competition shows on television. There are Project Runway, The Fashion Show on Bravo, Next in Fashion on Netflix, Making the Cut. If you are a teen or tween, you can also be on Project Runway: Threads which offers a Scholarship to attend Fashion School. Go to each of their websites to find out how to apply to be on these shows when you are ready.
Since the two main American fashion hubs are New York City, NY and Los Angeles, CA, you may want to make some trips to both places before you decide to relocate. Both cities are indeed very, very expensive. There is a way to live near L.A. and near New York City without having to live in the cities, so you must explore both and make a decision as to which one would be best for your career.
Next bit of advice is that I know Atlanta is like 200 miles from where you live, but explore Atlanta and any fashion community that may be there. It's perfectly fine to get experience in Atlanta first before relocating. You never know what opportunities may open up for you there. Start looking into things and you'll see that there's a lot to do and keeping busy like that can alleviate the worry.
You can do this. Just don't overthink, pre-plan how your career "must" go, be patient, open minded and active with fashion. Another benefit of Fashion School will be the great amount of support you'd receive.
