What is the best piece of advice you can give to an incoming college freshman?

I can't wait to start school but I am unsure what is essential in a dorm and just how to go about the overall transition.

Hi Emilie! You're about to start an amazing adventure, and it's so exciting! Moving to a dorm is a big change, but you're not alone—everyone else is experiencing it for the first time too. This is a fantastic chance to learn, grow, and discover who you want to be. If you can, go on a campus tour—they're a blast! Your school might have online groups for new students, so check those out. Following your school's social media pages can also give you a sneak peek into fun activities and clubs you can join!

When packing for your dorm, you'll get a list of what to bring. Don't forget to pack some personal items from home, like photos, art, or a cozy blanket, to make your space feel warm and familiar. You have everything you need to succeed, and it's going to be an incredible journey!

Hi Emilie! There is so much advice to give incoming freshman. I'd say a few things. One, don't over think it. It's an exciting time and you are going to have a great time. If you are feeling nervous see what the university has to offer. Most offer college days where high school seniors can go tour the campus. You will be able to see dorm rooms, cafeteria facilities, class rooms, and just about the whole campus. I highly recommend attending. This helps with nerves, but you will also be able to ask lots of questions.

As for your dorm room, the university will give you a list of things you need to bring: linens (sheets and pillows), laundry supplies (towels and hangers), desk supplies (notebooks and pencils), etc. The lists I've seen are pretty detailed. Don't overthink what you need. I'd start with the list they provide and then pick up things you need/want along the way.

If you are not able to make an in person visit to the college, most offer virtual experiences as well. Good luck!

Now is a great time to learn new skills and explore new interests by taking exciting classes. Each semester, you can try a fun, different class to see what catches your interest, while still focusing on your main courses. It's okay not to know exactly what you want to do right now. By trying lots of different things, you'll find out what you truly love.
