Hi Aerial. Here are some things that have helped us along our career journeys toward becoming lawyers.

- Being inquisitive, empathetic, patient and understanding is important because you will be working with people that are going through difficult circumstances, they may not readily know exactly what their legal issue is and you will need to be able to help them figure it out.

- Love of reading/writing because you'll be doing quite a bit of it!

- Solution-oriented, organized, and a creative problem solver.

- Work well with others, be a strong communicator, and practice public speaking.

Shannon’s Answer

While some areas of law require specific skills, general skills/qualities that will help you be successful as a lawyer include communications/public speaking, ability to work with others (teamwork), critical thinking, reading comprehension, writing, attention to detail, patience, multi-tasking, persevance and resilience. Some things you could do now to prepare for a career in law....read, read, read (books). Learn about the world by following the news/current events. See if there are any internship or "shadowing" opportunities through your town or local businesses. Join the debate team or theater, or other clubs and activities where you learn to work with others as a team.

Scott’s Answer

It's important that you develop your ability to think clearly, reach conclusions based on facts and communicate them both orally and in writing. All of the classes that you are taking are, in some way, helping you develop these skills. For example, your history and English classes are teaching you how to read and understand what you've read, and how to write clearly.

It's very important to develop critical thinking skills, and logical and impartial reasoning. Do things that challenge your mind, such as reading and analyzing what you've read.

Here's a list of some thoughts:
weighing facts and coming to conclusions
weighing the pros and cons of issues and options
deciding what information is and is not accurate and relevant
your ability to interpret that fact to lead to a conclusion
Practice doing word problems or story problems, and logic puzzles.
Practice oral and written communications skills. Clear and concise writing is very important

To add, time management skills are also important as a lawyer. Lawyers typically have several matters that they are working on at any given time. A lawyer’s ability to give each matter the appropriate time and respond by the relevant deadline are some keys to success in the legal field.
Keep up your interest in being a lawyer, and all the best to you!
