How to find volunteer work that promotes gaining skills for wildlife conservation and research career?

In the last year, I have volunteered anywhere I can: local forest preserves with prescribed burns, invasive plant control, promotion of native plants, and weed scouting and a wildlife center educating the public about conservation challenges, introducing guests to resident animals, and caring for and handling resident animals. At the wildlife center, I asked to complete a project gaining information on individual turtles in their turtle enclosure including length, weight, and gender. The turtles were also marked to identify them individually. What other volunteer opportunities should I be looking for to gain additional skills?

Thank you comment icon Look up your local Wildlife Society chapter - lots of folds involved in research and conservation. Look for internships for students with the National Park Service, if that's something you'd be interested in. Your local Fish and Game office may have volunteer or internship opportunities available, as well. Email and follow up with a call if you don't hear from them in about a week. Sometimes these folks have A LOT going on at once. Rebecca Acosta
