What are some tips for connecting with recruiters for summer internship programs, and how can I make them remember me as a potential candidate?

I'm heading into my second semester of sophomore year and have been in the midst of mass applying for internships. I could really use some advice on networking and making the right connections!

Hello Miralyssa Nadine. There are several strategies to help you stand out and stay top-of-mind with recruiters. First, you need to strengthen your online presence, especially on LinkedIn. You should use a clear headline, write a short summary about yourself, and list the projects, classes, or activities you're proud of. Recruiters often check your profile after meeting you, so you want it to represent you well. You can also follow companies you like and interact with their posts.

When you message recruiters, you should keep it short but personal. You can mention something specific about the company or why you're interested in their work. Introduce yourself, explain what kind of internship you're looking for, and share one quick example of something you've done that relates to their field.

Career fairs and virtual events are great chances to meet recruiters face-to-face (or screen-to-screen). Before attending, you need to learn a little about the companies you want to talk to and prepare a few questions. During the conversation, be friendly, listen carefully, and show excitement about the company. After the event, send a short thank-you message reminding them of something specific you talked about. This small step makes it much easier for them to remember you.

One of the best ways to stand out is by sharing a simple personal story. Instead of listing facts about yourself, explain why you're interested in your field, a challenge you've faced, or a project you enjoyed. Recruiters meet many students, so a short story helps you stick in their memory.

If you're prepared, polite, and genuinely interested, recruiters will start to recognize you and think of you as a strong candidate when internship spots open up. All the best to you.
