Where can I find part-time accounting jobs while attending college?

I am currently an accounting major at Elgin Community College, and plan to transfer to a four-year college in Fall 2026. I have taken a few accounting courses and would like to gain work experience before I graduate.

Hi Allison. One of the first places you should check is your college's career center. Many colleges have career services that can help students find jobs or internships. The career center might have listings for part-time accounting jobs or internships, and they can help you connect with local businesses looking for students to hire. You may also want to attend job fairs or networking events on campus. These are good opportunities to meet employers who might be looking for part-time workers with accounting skills.

Another great way to find work is by looking for local businesses or nonprofit organizations in your area. Small companies or accounting firms often need help with basic accounting tasks like bookkeeping, accounts payable, or payroll. These businesses might not have the budget to hire full-time employees, but they may be open to hiring students for part-time roles. Nonprofits are also a good option because they often need help with financial tasks but don't have a lot of money to spend on staff. Offering to help with tasks like managing budgets or preparing financial reports could give you valuable experience.

In addition to local businesses, you can also use online job search websites to find part-time accounting positions. There are several online platforms that specialize in listing part-time jobs, internships, or freelance work, including sites like Indeed, LinkedIn, etc.

Networking can also help you find part-time work. You can talk to your professors who may know about job openings at local businesses or accounting firms. They might even recommend you for a position if they think you're a good fit.
