Wong’s Answer

Hi Andrew. To know if construction management is right for you, you need to think about your interests and try real experiences.

First, you need to ask yourself why you chose construction management. Do you enjoy the idea of building and seeing a project come to life? Do you like solving problems, organizing tasks, and working with a team? If these things excite you, construction management could be a good fit. If you feel stressed thinking about budgets, schedules, or managing people, it may be worth thinking about your skills and interests more carefully.

Practical experience is very important, so, try to get internships, part-time jobs, or volunteer opportunities in construction or project management. Seeing what a construction manager does every day can help you understand the work better. You can also talk to people who already work in construction management, ask them about their jobs, what they like, and what is hard. Learning from their experiences can help you see if you would enjoy the same work.

Dawne’s Answer

Andrew, I'd like to add to Wong's advice by encouraging you to keep your options open. The Project and Program Management field offers many opportunities that might suit your skills and interests, even if they're not directly in construction. Let me share a bit about my own journey. I studied Criminal Psychology and law because I wanted to help people and solve problems. After college, I struggled to find the right job, so I started as an IT helpdesk agent to pay the bills. This role allowed me to use my problem-solving skills and assist others. I then moved on to become a data analyst, a Telecom specialist, and eventually an Infrastructure Project Manager for Call Centres. Today, I'm a Senior Director of field engineering at a large tech company, leading a team across the country. I use my college skills every day to solve problems and lead my team effectively.

The key message here is that the world is full of possibilities. Think about what excites you about construction management and explore beyond it. Your education can open doors to many unexpected but rewarding paths. Networking is crucial, as it can lead to opportunities you might not have considered. Building connections will be vital for your future success and happiness. Find a job you love, and it won't feel like work. Best of luck on your journey!
