Hi Katd. Optometry school is challenging. The classes are harder than high school and most college classes. Even with the heavy workload, you can still have a personal life. In fact, it's important to take breaks so you don't burn out. You can still spend time with friends, relax, watch shows, go to the gym, or enjoy hobbies. The difference is that you may need to plan your free time instead of being spontaneous. You might only have a couple hours free some days, but those small breaks help you stay balanced and happy.
Your classmates will also become a huge support system. Since you're all going through the same challenges, you often become very close. Study groups help the material make more sense, and having people who understand your schedule makes school feel less stressful. Family and old friends may need a little understanding during busy exam weeks, but most people are supportive.
One of the best parts of optometry school is that everything you learn connects to your future career. When you start working with real patients, it reminds you why all the studying is worth it, and it becomes very motivating. Wishing you all the best.
