I want to generally study engineering, but I'm unsure how to pick between the multiple disciplines. #Fall25
I am a Senior in High School, and my top 3 choices right now are mechanical, aerospace, and materials engineering. I am strongly into aerospace, but I know a mechanical degree might be more widel applicable.

Hello Kai,
In my honest opinion engineering is a balance between passion and technical expertise.
The fields you mentioned are all competitive and offer strong career opportunities if you’re willing to put in the work.
At the young age you are, I would focus more on what I'd like and what I would think I could be more fond of
and definitely not choose something only based on what the market needs, because that could easily turn it into a chore.
The good news is that all three of these disciplines have solid job prospects.
So what I suggest is to trust your interests and whichever path you pick, you’ll have opportunities ahead.

Hi Kai,
As a senior in high school, you are in an excellent position to prepare for your future and explore your top three fields of interest: mechanical, aerospace, and materials engineering. To choose the field that best fits you, it’s important to learn about each area, understand their requirements, and see how they align with your interests and strengths. Here are a few actions you can take to make an informed decision:
1. Take more math and science classes. Dive in and gauge your interest—identify which subjects excite you the most and challenge you in a positive way
2. Talk to advisors who are knowledgeable about these fields. Ask questions, explore resources, and look for summer programs that allow you to gain hands-on experience
3. Keep in mind that changing major is common in college. Taking foundational courses early will give you flexibility to switch fields if your interests evolve
With these actions, you’ll be better prepared to make a good choice .
Best of luck as you explore your options!
