What extracurricular should I do in high school to have practice for neuroscience?

Should I maybe join a psychology club to explore the brain or should I volunteer at a day care to see the brain development of kids and adults?

Hi Ashlee,

There are lots of different opportunities to get involved in neuroscience. I'm near Los Angeles and I know that UCLA offers a program for high school students. (virtual options as well!) The UCLA Neuroscience High School Scholars Program supports high school students in exploring careers in neuroscience. I am aware that they lead monthly sessions introducing topics in neuroscience as well as assigning virtual lessons.

I would definitely look into local schools in the Bay Area and see if they offer similar programs or offer a summer program that you can attend. Summer programs are most likely paid but some schools do offer scholarship opportunities!

If you are thinking of joining a psychology club or volunteering at a day care, those are great places to start! A psychology club could expose you to many opportunities such as internships or summer camps in which you can learn more about neuroscience and make connections with professionals. A day care would give you not only work experience with children but also a chance to practice your observational skills. My time working in the K-12 setting, you spend a lot of time with behavioral analysis and management. Something that I think would be very valuable in the neuroscience pathway.

Depending on what field of neuroscience you want to get into, it wouldn't hurt to reach out to professionals and see if you can shadow them.

Best of luck!
