Hi Xianghao,

You can get into a major if you didn't take the classes in high-school, but how easy it is will depend on the major you want to study, the classes you did and didn't take in high-school and the college you want to go to. Everybody's path is different. People change careers all the time. You just need to figure out what's required and make it happen.

For engineering, several years of math and science in high-school are typically required for college admission. Some majors such as nursing might also have a list of pre-requisites you need to pass before you can even apply. Sometimes, there might also be admission tests. You can go to university websites and check the admission criteria for each major you are interested in. I left some links for UC and CSU admission for you below as examples. There is also contact information for a meeting with an advisor.

If you didn't take required classes in high-school, consider starting at a community college near you with open admission to get your associates degree before you transfer to a 4-year institution for your bachelors. Some institutions also have bridging courses and foundational programs to get you up to speed in math and science.

I hope this helps! All the best to you!

Hi Xianghao,

I can't speak to the specific college you'll be entering, but I changed my major several times in college. I had a very different plan going in than I did coming out of college. Some colleges are specific to specialize in these areas, but showing your interest and enthusiasm in other ways like job shadowing and online courses can be helpful as well.

I hope that helps! Good luck on your journey!
