In your first year of college, you might feel limited in your class choices since you need to complete some required courses before diving into your major. You'll take classes like English, Math, and Biology, but there's also room for an elective that interests you, such as Art or Psychology. This can be a fun way to explore new subjects and even boost your GPA with an easy A+.

If you don't have AP credit or community college transfer units, try to complete your general education courses quickly. This is especially important if you want to finish your degree in four years. These courses can fill up fast, making it hard to get a spot. For example, I delayed taking Speech because I didn't like public speaking, but I was lucky it didn't extend my graduation time. Don't wait; get these courses done early.

Hi Mark,
For your first year, it is a good idea to take a mix of classes that help you adjust to college while also moving you forward. This usually includes general education classes, a class related to your major if you know it, and maybe one class you are interested in. Taking general education classes can also help if you decide to change your major later, since those classes usually still count.
Try not to overload yourself in your first semester. Give yourself time to adjust to the workload and pace of college. It is better to start off balanced and build from there once you know what you can handle.
