Why do some students struggle with consistency even after improving, and what can I do now to make sure I stay on track in college and my career?

I am currently a senior in high school graduating in 2026, and I’ve recently turned my academics around after not taking school as seriously earlier on. I’ve learned a lot about discipline and focus, and I’m now committed to continuing that growth into college and my future career. I’ve been accepted to Grand Valley State University, where I plan to major in Business Administration.

Outside of school, I stay active in my community by passing out food through the Greater Food Bank, which has helped me develop a stronger sense of responsibility and purpose. I’ve also worked part-time at Kroger, Michaels, and Taco Bell, where I’ve gained real-world skills like communication, teamwork, and time management. In addition, I currently run track at school to stay socially engaged and challenge myself.

I’m asking this question because I want to make sure I carry these habits into college and stay on the right path toward long-term success.

This is awesome! Congratulations on being accepted to GVSU! Although not in your major area, Professor Jeff Kelly-Lowenstein is a great person to know and connect with there. He's in the journalism school but he has helped a number of students like you stay motivated, get connected with people around the world doing the work they want to do and helping them find meaningful lives after college. I think the most important things is balancing classes and your personal life. Make time to find a club or group to connect with for fun; as well as, engaging with study or work groups.

Next steps below are what most seniors are doing in April and May. By summer time, check with your HS counselor and college contact to ensure all transcripts, medical forms, and other docs have been submitted. Start packing for orientation and your first week of school. Finalize your budget for the academic year.

CELEBRATE! You’ve worked hard the last 4 years to get to graduation day. Celebrate your accomplishments and think positively about the bright future you have in front of you.

Sonjanita L. recommends the following next steps:

Go to your school's social media, Youtube and Niche to get an idea of what every day life is like at your school. Where do students work? Have fun? Hang out?
Do you have a current drivers’ license, state ID or US passport? Do you have a resume that has been updated recently or a digital resume?
If you haven’t already, begin downloading important school files and begin forwarding important emails to your personal account.
Check in with your teachers about your grades. Pay any outstanding high school fees. Prepare for final exams, Prom, and Graduation.
What deposits or fees are required? How will those be paid for? Create a college wishlist at a store of your choosing
