Paul’s Answer

Hi Ashish

No, myself and Dr. Lewis Henry Gates would disagree. There are many examples of people who have majored in history and have become historians, who are doing very well. There are many examples of Historians, who have excelled in the field and gone on to lucrative careers. This is especially true in the case of those in the field of academia. There are numerous leaders and college Presidents, who make in excess of a million dollars in their current positions this includes:

1.    Esther Barrazone from Chatham University (1.8 million)

2.    John Sexton from NYU (1.4 million)

3.    Nathan Hatch from Wake Forest (1.3 million)

4.    Drew Jaust from Harvard ($899,000)

5.    Edward Ayers from the University of Richmond ($863,000)

Carly Fiorina the head of Hewlet-Packard also majored in history in college and Susan Wojcicki the head of Youtube majored in History as well. There are several different career paths in which history majors and historians can pursue. This includes the fields of education, law, government, communications and private business. So the field of history has many endless possibilities for you to pursue in the future, and great potential to make a very good income. There could be more education or certifications for you to achieve, but the potential is definitely there.

Paul recommends the following next steps:

Research the field of History majors and historians and see what education and careers skills they have which enables them to branch into other fields.
Go to a career center and see what jobs historians and history majors in college pursue.
Speak to a college academic advisor and research possible career paths for historians and individuals who have concentrations in history.
