How can I use a psychology degree to build a career in human resources or related fields?

I'm a college student planning to major in psychology and possibly minor in human resources. I wanted to know what steps I should take in my college journey to prepare for a future career in Human Resources or behavioral health. #Spring26

Hi Leanna,

I took a very similar path to you and majored in Sociology with a minor in Business! There are a lot of others like us in HR. My biggest recommendations are what you do outside of the classroom. Join clubs that get you closer to the work, build your resume, and make connections. I reached out to several companies in the area that did HR-focused consulting to learn more about what skills I can work on developing. One of those information sessions turned into a job interview and got me a job through the summer and the rest of college. A friend of mine did freelance HR for local non-profits to build his skills, experience, and learn what he wanted to focus on.

This exploration will also help you develop your "why" and will be a big part of how you introduce yourself to companies and why they will choose you over other candidates

I later got an MBA in HR specifically to focus more on HR and become more competitive and knowledgeable in the field, but many of my colleagues have not.

Good luck!
