How do I know if my passion for veterinary medicine is sustainable long-term, and what steps can I take early in my career to prevent burnout? #Spring26

I’m a first-generation college student currently pursuing a career in veterinary medicine. I’ve been working in veterinary settings since I was 16, gaining experience in general practice, emergency care, and client communication. These experiences have shown me both the incredibly rewarding and emotionally challenging sides of the field, and I’m passionate about continuing on this path while learning how to build a sustainable, long-term career.

It's fantastic that you've not only discovered a career interest but also gained valuable real-world experience in the field. This will be a huge advantage for you in the future!

I suggest talking to veterinarians or their staff about any concerns you have and asking for their advice. They've probably faced similar challenges and can share helpful strategies.

While I can't speak specifically about veterinary training, I know that Mental Health Counseling programs teach skills to handle burnout.

Wishing you all the best!
