What are the best strategies for succeeding in a real estate career?

I am planning to go to college for a degree in Business Management and minor in Education. I am a high school senior now but would like to start getting my real estate license while in college. Also, when getting my real estate license my goal is to one day own my own firm.

Real Estate success is all about having connections and building a credible brand. I had my licenses as a side-gig for a year and quickly realized it was not for me. This is not to say it's not for you, but just sharing my experience.

As a young person, you're unlikely to have friends who own/are looking to own. You need to make sales/have listings to build credibility and I didn't have anyone in that financial situation. And cold calling was NOT for me! But your expanded network may vary, only you can know that! Maybe you know some landlords that own commercial spaces? Maybe you have family friends who are looking to sell their home? Buying/Selling are some of the biggest financial decisions a person will make in their life and they absolutely want to make sure they're going with someone they trust.

That said, you have to start somewhere! Is there someone you can shadow? Is there an emerging business/investor you may be able to partner with as you grow?

I will say that even though I am not licensed any longer, I was very well informed when it came time to buy my own home. I had so much confidence during that process, which is something most people cannot say. I think the class and studying was worth it for that alone!

A great approach is to find someone who has done really well, invite them for a cup of coffee, and ask them how they achieved their success. It's also important to join a company that cares about helping you grow. There are many fantastic real estate companies out there. Best of luck!
