Can I teach a subject that I minor in at the college level, or do I have to major in that subject?
I'm going into college next year, and I want to major in history and minor in related subjects (philosophy, women & gender studies). I plan on becoming a history professor. Can I teach related classes like philosophy once I finish my degree and get a teaching certificate, or would I have to double major?

Hi Genevive,
There are many teacher who veered into teaching subjects that they never directly focused on for their degree. What you can do to strengthen your qualifications is focus on your resume. Stating that you minored in the related subject helps, but universities might prefer someone with a PHD or published literature if they can find one. If you are thinking of teaching at the high school level, and go through the teaching certification process then majoring /degree / PHD, shouldn't be an issue.
Start a blog about what interests you about philosophy or women & gender studies. You can pair it with history to support your major as well. If you write any papers for your minor, publish them on your blog, or submit them to philosophy, history or women & gender studies journals. These actions can be put on your resume to support your knowledge and expertise on the subject. I would also suggest finding online or in person tutoring in philosophy or women & gender studies to beef up your teaching experience / skills on the subject. Good Luck!
