How do I find a part-time job on campus without work study that will allow me to work a maximum of 5-8 hours a week? Also, what are some tips to maintain a work-study-social life balance as an architecture student? ?

I will be studying architecture in the fall at the University of Oregon. I am struggling and doing everything I can to pay for college, but I am only attending a state school and have received barely any financial support from the school itself. I even have to find a second job this summer and work during college to support myself.

Hi Bailey,

I worked as a secretary for my scholarship organization on campus, and it was a great way to improve my communication skills. I was the first person everyone saw when they came in, and I worked with many different people in the office. During my interview, I mentioned that I could only work 8 hours a week because of my full course load. I suggest you focus on your studies rather than getting a second job. There are loan options available to help with school and other expenses. It might be tempting to take on more work, but think of your education as an investment in your future. Once you have a full-time job, you can pay back your loans and live the life you’ve always dreamed of. I took out several loans during my master's program, and even though it was a bit scary, I'm glad I did because it allowed me to concentrate on my studies.
Thank you comment icon Hi Nathalye, My main goal is to actually avoid taking loans for as long as possible because starting architects do not make much at all. I will not be making a good salary until I've gained 5+ years of experience. I have weighed all my other possible options, and gaining a job during college will help with expenses. Otherwise, I will go into debt during my first year, even if I take out the maximum number of loans and spend all my savings. Do you have any advice on finding a second job on campus? I am doing all I can to also work during my summers. Bailey
Thank you comment icon Hi Bailey, Yes, I would look for low-stress jobs, like the secretary position I had, which sometimes had downtime and allowed me to work on my homework assignments. Other jobs that tend to have downtime include dorm desk assistants and library assistants. I would also recommend looking into different scholarship opportunities through your university or searching for scholarships that focus on architecture student to help with your costs.
