When should I realistically start thinking about research and internship opportunities?
I am planning on double majoring in psychology and business and hopefully getting a PhD in clinical psychology.

Start early—ideally as soon as your first year in the fall. Many internships open applications that same fall and begin closing them by December or January for the following summer, especially at larger companies.
It’s something a lot of students don’t realize at first, but timing matters a lot in the internship process. Big companies tend to recruit early, so having it on your radar from the start can really make a difference.

It's great that you're thinking about this so early. There are opportunities at every stage, so start exploring them sooner rather than later. Most employers expect to provide training, so whether you're a freshman or a junior often matters less than you think. The key is to start networking now. Even if an opportunity doesn't come up immediately, you'll begin building relationships, learning who the key people are in your area of interest, and creating connections that could lead to an internship or future role.
