What options do I have for a career in psychology if I don't want to be a therapist??

I am a high school senior about to enter my freshman year of college at Eastern Connecticut State University. I love the field of psychology, especially the study of human behavior and thought processes. I would like to pursue a career focused more on the research aspect of psychology, but I'm not sure what the options are in that concentration.

Dr. Kelly’s Answer

As a fellow Connecticut resident, you'll find plenty of opportunities beyond just therapist roles. Pursuing a master's or doctoral degree can give you an edge in the job market. Many social services and supervisory positions, like those in Allied programs, often look for candidates with advanced degrees, especially when working with adults with disabilities.

Connecticut also has numerous state prisons where you can explore roles in recreation and rehabilitation if you're interested in working with inmates. If you're considering working in a school as a paraprofessional, having 60 college credits or two years of equivalent experience is usually enough.

Don't hesitate to reach out to your professors for advice on career paths. They often have valuable insights and connections in the field that can help guide you.

Martha D.’s Answer

Hi, Antonio, and congratulations on reaching this exciting juncture in your life.
There are potential jobs for you in academia, government (don't forget state and local), non-profit, and potentially business (although more applied than research). For the link below, you need to scroll a bit to reach the eight job types in psychology research.
Once you are on campus, there will be resources to help you find potential internship and career opportunities (see second link below). There may also be student community services opportunities to deepen your understanding of how psychology research is used. Some schools even offer academic credit for these opportunities.
Wishing you good luck!
