What skills should I be working on developing to be successful once I graduate both with my patients and coworkers but also outside of work financially?
Hi my name is Brandon. I am a sophomore at Nevada State University. I am about to begin the nursing program and I was wondering what skills should I be working on developing to be successful once I graduate both with my patients and coworkers but also outside of work financially. I want to be the best nurse I can be while also setting myself up for success. Thank you.

Hey Brandon,
You’re in luck! Your question is actually pretty easy to answer, in my opinion. In school definitely do your best to try to know as much actual nursing knowledge as you can, pay particular attention to pathophysiology and pharmacology. Outside school(and inside) start as many conversations with strangers as you can. Honestly, talk to as many people as possible… it will become your job to meet strangers having pretty bad days every day you go to work. Developing easy rapport with people will be your biggest asset that people actually see you demonstrate on a regular basis. As far as financial… start now learning to live on 80% of your take home pay. If you’re not earning income keep that in mind… that’s do it comes easily to you when you’re making more money to do the same, save the 20% in your retirement account, and you’ll be so far ahead of the game when it comes time to consider retirement. Please trust me on that last part, time will seem infinite but the years become a blur and once you get behind it’s so hard, if not impossible, to catch up.
Good luck!
