Expanding your professional network is about building genuine relationships, not just collecting contacts. Start by connecting with classmates, professors, and alumni from your program. They are often the easiest and most valuable first connections.
Use platforms like LinkedIn to create a strong profile and stay active. Share your thoughts, projects, or learnings to make your presence visible. Attend seminars, workshops, and industry events whenever possible. These spaces are great for meeting professionals and learning from them.
Don’t hesitate to start conversations—simple introductions can go a long way. Ask thoughtful questions and show genuine interest in others’ work.
Reach out for informational interviews with people in roles you admire. Most professionals are open to sharing their experiences with students. Join student clubs, business groups, or professional communities. Being part of such groups helps you meet like-minded people. Follow up after meeting someone with a short message or note. This helps turn a brief meeting into a lasting connection.
Also, focus on giving value—share resources, ideas, or help when you can. Networking works best when it’s mutual, not one-sided. Be consistent and patient, as strong networks take time to grow. If you stay genuine and proactive, your network will naturally expand and support your career.

One angle that’s often missed: don’t just meet people, stay useful and memorable after the first interaction.
Most networking fails not because people don’t connect, but because they don’t follow up meaningfully. After meeting someone, send a short message referencing your conversation and add something valuable, an article, insight, or even a quick update on something you discussed.
Also, try to build a small circle rather than a large list. A few strong relationships where people actually know your work and goals are far more powerful than hundreds of weak connections.
Lastly, think long-term. Networking isn’t about immediate results; it’s about staying visible, relevant, and helpful over time.

Hey Simone,
I bucket my advice into two parts:
1) Put yourself out there (Attend workshops, seminars)
2) Be professional but start of as a friend first. (Start with casual conversations first and getting to know one another first. Bonus tip: If you can identify a common like, that will be a good starting point)
All the best!

A great way to grow your career is by attending industry events, seminars, and career-related gatherings. These are perfect places to meet professionals in your field. Try joining LinkedIn groups to expand your professional network. Engage with posts related to your field and feel free to ask questions. Building a strong network takes time, but staying active on social media will help you connect with more people. Also, consider joining your alumni association to meet other professionals.
