Paul’s Answer

Hi Maria, all artists are their own toughest critics. Whether humble or arrogant, they always find flaws in their work. Take Pablo Picasso, for example. In 1910, at the Galerie de la Vieille Russie in Paris, he was seen making final touches to his painting "Portrait of Ambroise Vollard" even after it was hung. This shows how artists continue to refine their work, even when others admire it. Picasso didn't feel his painting was finished, despite the praise it received. You're not alone, Maria. Keep doing what you love, and you'll keep improving. You've got this!

Hi Maria,

If your teacher says you are good in art, it's probably true! Teachers want to encourage you for sure, but they don't usually lie to you. Do you get good marks? You wouldn't get those if your work was not good.

Most people are more critical about their own work, especially in an art field, than other people. If you have multiple people tell you, that your art is good, you can believe that it's true.

You are probably still very young, so you can have a natural talent for art AND still do better if you practice your skills in different techniques and learn about different art forms and styles in art to find your very own way to express yourself through art.

I hope this helps! All the best to you!

Hey Maria,

That is common among artists. It's nothing to worry about. You will find that now matter how good a piece art is that you do, you will always see things in it that could be better.
Don't worry, if someone compliments your work, don't for example say I could have done this or that better, because if they thought the art was bad or had a lot of mistakes they would not even be asking about your art work.
Like the great Bob Ross said "If people had a problem with your painting they would not have asked in the first place"

Don't worry about it:)

Hi Maria,
First, I think you shouldn’t be so hard on yourself. I think something is always going to look differently in your view compared to someone else. If someone believes it is art to them that’s a good sign that you’re doing well in art. Don’t discredit yourself about because your not going to like everything your design that’s apart of life. If you do not like it just continue to perfect your craft.

Julia’s Answer

Thank you for sharing this, Maria. I understand what you mean. Many artists, even very good ones, look at their work and think, “It is not good enough” or “I could do better.”
But this does not mean your drawing is "ugly". Sometimes we are much harder on ourselves than other people are. Your teacher may see something in your drawing that you cannot see yet — maybe the feeling, the idea, the effort, or your own style.
Art does not have to be perfect or beautiful to be art. Art is also about trying, learning, and showing something from yourself. It is good that you want to improve, because this means you care. But try not to speak badly about your work. Instead of saying “it is ugly,” you can say, “I want to improve this part next time.”
Also, sometimes when we say our work is not good, maybe we are afraid to be proud, or maybe we want to know if other people really like it. This is normal. But your art does not need to impress everyone to have value.
Just Keep drawing. Be honest with yourself, but also be kind with yourself. You can want to do better and still respect what you have already made.

Hi Maria,

You sure sound like an artist to me! When anyone gives you a compliment, just say, "Thank you." It will make them feel good and hopefully you'll start to believe them too.

In the meantime, focus on enjoying making art. If you have fun doing it, you'll practice. And if you practice, you'll get better--maybe even so much better that you'll like your own work as much as others do!

Hope this helps.
