What's your advice on double majoring completely different majors?

I'm thinking of doing computer science however I have other interests and was thinking of minoring in them.

Michael’s Answer

Hello Tamania,

My advice is don't do it for the resume bullets ... do it because you want the education. It is a tough road for just one major and two will add to it. Many start with a double major idea, but find out it's not what they really wanted in the end or it will take longer than they want to invest; and there are other alternatives.

I have four kids (two graduated college, one in their last year, and in their second) and my advice is pick one major, get accepted to the college for it (not always easy), and be extremely good at that. Then if you have second degree of interest, get exposure by talking to the professors, maybe taking classes; but determine the workload for basic exposure (some classes) to full major credits. Then decide if you want to pursue it.

Sometimes other options for your resume, 'concentrations' or 'focus', are alternatives you really want instead of a full second 'degree'. My son graduated with a BS in Business Marketing with a focus in Software Engineering; it gave him what he wanted to qualify for some highly rewarding jobs even before graduation.

Best of luck!

Michael recommends the following next steps:

Do you some research on colleges with majors you are interested in and visit their counseling department. Ask them your question and alternatives as I mentioned above.
