How to decide between choosing a major you’re interested in, and one that may be better for finding a job you’ll enjoy?

I was recently admitted to Northeastern University with the combined major of Criminal Justice & Psychology which I think would be super interesting, except for the fact that I don’t want to be a lawyer or work in law enforcement. I’m at a crossroads now deciding if I want to continue my plan with criminal justice & psychology or change majors to lead to a job I would enjoy more. #college-major #choosing #college #academic-advising #criminal-justice #psychology

Breanna,

You've been admitted to a great college with lots of resources. I have graduated from Northeastern University and it's a great place. In my opinion, college is a place where you will discover many things about yourself including what you want to do once you graduate. If you do not wish to become a lawyer or work in law enforcement but still take courses in criminal justice & psychology, you can take them as part of your electives. In this way, you'll be able to prepare yourself for your desired career but still take classes in subjects you're interested in.

Hi Brenna,

I also went to Northeastern University and felt the same way since I wanted to study Mathematics, but I did not want to pursue a job in that field. I became a combined major in Mathematics and Finance so I could continue my studies while focusing on Finance co-ops.

I also had a friend who was a criminal justice major and you would be surprised the career opportunities associated with that major that are not just a lawyer. She pursued a job in security at a government agency, but there were many co-ops she was able to do.

I recommend continuing in areas that interest you and explore the different job opportunities associated with those majors.
