Hey Alex,

I'm a software intern a Verizon and study computer science in California.

As people have stated, it really just depends from school to school but there's a few topics that come up again and again. Those are Data structures, algorithms, operating systems, computer networking, and software engineering/architecture. Then there are classes you can take that will may or may not be required like AI, game development, machine learning, big data, web, etc.

If you want to get a head start on college I'd recommend learning the basics of a programming language of your choice, and start practicing data structures and algorithms. These two subjects come up the most in typical programming interviews.

Good luck.

Hi Alex,

You can do a search of top computer science programs to begin your search. You can also search local colleges and universities to determine whether they offer a program in computer science. When considering computer science, you must think about what it is you like about it. This field will require strong skills in math and science (sometimes optional), as well as strong analytical skills. Some computer science programs will offer/require courses in computer programming, languages, coding, software, security, etc. Some programs will offer a combination of computer science and information technology and others will be completely separate. If you have a specific area of focus, such as video game design, you should look specifically for this within the computer science program at a college or university. You can go to any college website, select undergraduate majors, then choose courses, and you will be able to see the exact courses offered and required for the computer science major. These directions are very general and will be easier or more difficult to locate on any given website. Good luck!
