Adriana’s Answer

Hello Collen, I was a cosmetologist and it's a very exciting career! If you are a people person and like making people look beautiful, this is a great option because it's very rewarding career. A few things that help me be successful were interpersonal skills, listening skills to ensure that you know exactly what your customer needs and provide great customer service. Being flexible and open to continue to learn and evolve your skills to learn new techniques.

Adriana recommends the following next steps:

Check out different schools
Talk to you personal hair stylist to maybe shadow a day or couple hours.
Ask as many stylist as possible to get different perspectives.

Ms.’s Answer

Hi, Colleen!

I'm not in this particular field, but my sister is. Based on my conversations with her over the years, the top three skills you would most likely need to be successful are: great interpersonal skills (do you like to meet new people and listen to their stories), ability to problem solve quickly, and patience (a lot of it is customer service!). As you'll probably find, these are also transferrable skills. Almost any career you find is going to require some level of interpersonal skills, the ability to problem solve, and patience.

Also, clients who feel like you provided them with good service are more likely to refer other people they know to you, and this grows your service. Networking is important in this field (and any field, really!).

Are you connected with someone in the field yet? If not, I'd encourage you to reach out and see if you're able to job shadow or do an informational interview to learn more. What I often tell students who I advise is I can recite facts off of websites and tell you what I know about a particular field, but some of the best folks to help you sort things out are going to be the ones actually in the field. I'd say get connected if you haven't yet!

Best of luck to you!
