Nicole’s Answer

Hi Angela,

Congratulations on taking a look at going into the trades as a rewarding and fulfilling career! The trades are experiencing a critical shortage of talent entering those fields and have largely been under-valued in our society over the last several decades. The push for "everyone to go to college" has been intense across the U.S. and has overlooked the millions of people, who for a multitude of reasons, choose not to attend college. You don't need a college degree, but earning a high school degree is highly preferred. The beauty of the trades is that you can start at the bottom and work your way up, learning the trade by skilled tradespeople who need people who are willing to work, hard, listen, and learn these skills. Seek out builders in your area and express interest in internships and on the job training. If you are willing to work hard, they should be thrilled to teach you. Good luck on this noble path!

Raashid’s Answer

1. You usually need a high school diploma.

2. To gain trade certification as a carpenter, you usually need either a three- to four-year apprenticeship program, or a combination of over four years' work experience and some high school, college, or industry courses in carpentry.

3. Trade certification is compulsory in Quebec and available, but voluntary, in all other provinces/territories.

4. Qualified carpenters may also obtain interprovincial (Red Seal) trade certification, which provides job mobility throughout the country.

5. With experience, you may move up the ranks to become a supervisor.

6. Most recent entrants have a trade/vocational certificate and almost 2 in 5 have a community college diploma.
