The most recent technological advance in my field of colon and rectal surgery has been the Da Vinci robot. The robot provides a minimally invasive platform on which to perform major abdominal surgery. With the ERAS (enhanced recovery after surgery) protocol, patients undergoing a robotic colectomy will go home 1-2 days after surgery on a regular diet with no narcotics.
