Carole’s Answer

It is wonderful that you already have a degree in Statistics, because you will be able to create surveys and experiments to figure out the effectiveness of a certain drug, and help to find out the problems with this drug. The typical first jobs in this field include Mathematical Statistician and especially Research Assistant and that can be accomplished within the medical field. Many statisticians continue with school to acquire a Master's degree, because Master's degrees are required for many positions, like Financial Analysts, Biostatisticians, Data Analysts. If you choose to stay in the medical area the Research area is the best. To actually practice medicine you would need to pursue Med. School, and then you eventually have a option for surgery.

If I were trying to find out more about this area I would visit a teaching Hospital and you may want to start out as a researcher in the drug area and be in the environment to see if this is where you want to be. You can always interview for a research job, and if you are hired you can see if you like the research area, otherwise you must have a Medical degree.

Carole recommends the following next steps:

Check into the hospitals especially the Teaching Hospitals because many times they have research jobs for people with your skills and degree. Please check it out and I think it will help you recognize that your skills are very useful in medicine.
